DECONSTRUCTED GRID PORTRAIT

NOVEMBER 2021 — PAPER, CHARCOAL, TWINE, PUSH PINS, CARDBOARD

Artist Statement

The end result doesn’t read grid, however, the process I used to create this piece utilized the concept of grid. I began by drawing a distorted grid on paper, the lines of the grid were straight, however, the angle in which they pointed was tweaked. I flipped the paper over and used the grid on the reverse side to decide where to place pushpins. At a few select intersections of line, I placed pins to reflect the distorted grid on the backside. I also placed pins to create the shape of my head and nose. Where they were placed coincides with the non-distorted grid I had placed over an image of myself. To the average person, the element of grid is nonexistent, however, I can see the grid within it. The result does not reflect the process, and I enjoy that aspect of this piece. I have produced a simple, yet textured person. The words that come to mind are quiet, clean, and observatory.
